Jhin guide: build, runes, matchups and mistakes to avoid

Jhin fires only four shots before reloading, and the fourth is always a critical strike: his whole game turns around that rhythm. He roots from afar the targets he or his allies have just hit, and ends fights with a very long-range ultimate. In our sample, Jhin shows up in ≈ 16.2% of 378,251 ranked solo games and wins 50.3% of 59,208 games in bot lane.

The build that wins most

A build, here, is the order of the first three finished items. Out of the 11,367 Jhin games in bot lane where those three items are known, the three most-played paths:

BuildItemsPlayedWin rate
1Hubris → The Collector → Infinity Edge26%≈ 53.8%
2Hubris → Phantom Dancer → Infinity Edge17%≈ 56.0%
3The Collector → Infinity Edge → Lord Dominik’s Regards8%≈ 51.2%

Hubris as the first item is the most-played start; after it, Phantom Dancer wins more often than The Collector (≈ 56.0% against ≈ 53.8%). Going straight for The Collector (build 3) wins less.

With build 1, the game most often starts with Doran’s Blade + Health Potion, the boots are Boots of Swiftness (90% of games) and the skills are maxed in the order Q > W > E (98%). Most frequent next items: Lord Dominik’s Regards, Rapid Firecannon, Guardian Angel.

Matchups: the easiest and the hardest

Jhin’s win rate against each opponent in the same role, compared with the champion’s usual 50.3%: the gap in points. Only matchups of at least 200 games are kept.

Yasuo911≈ 46.8%−3.6
Zeri1,158≈ 47.2%−3.1
Tristana3,61748.1%−2.2

Jhin suffers against the marksmen who attack fast and slip in — Twitch, Zeri, Tristana — and against Yasuo, whose wind wall stops his shots and his ultimate. Against them, don’t spend your fourth shot on a minion when the trade is coming, and keep your root for their entry rather than for poke. Against Ezreal or Caitlyn, your traps and your fourth shot win the short trades.

The most frequent mistakes

Two habits measured on the 14,819 games with a minute-by-minute timeline, then the champion’s own mistakes. These gaps go with losing without proving the cause, but the habit to build is clear.

  • Dying before 15 minutes. 44% of games have three or more deaths before the 15th minute; they win only 40.0%, against 62.6% when Jhin dies once or less (32% of games). Instead: Jhin has no dash. Stand where their engage can’t reach you without walking through your minions, and keep Flash for their engage, not for a kill.
  • Falling behind on farm. At 10 minutes, games with 66 minions or fewer (27%) win 42.0%; those with 81 or more (26%), 57.5%. Instead: count your shots — keep the fourth for the minion you would otherwise miss or for the champion when a trade starts, never for an ordinary last hit.
  • Dark Harvest by habit. Dark Harvest · Domination + Precision is taken in 9,043 Jhin games and wins 48.0%; Deathfire Touch · Sorcery + Precision wins 52.4%. Instead: try Deathfire Touch, or Fleet Footwork with Inspiration (51.0%).
  • Reaching a trade with an empty gun. Jhin out of shots deals no damage: walking into a trade with one shot left means losing it. Instead: let your reload happen when there is nothing to hit, and come into the trade with your fourth shot ready.
  • Casting the ultimate up close. Your ultimate fires from very far and roots you in place while it lasts: casting it near the enemies offers them a still target. Instead: cast it from the fog or from behind your team, to finish whoever runs or to open a fight from range.
