Kai’Sa guide: build, runes, matchups and mistakes to avoid

Kai’Sa is a marksman with an assassin’s reflexes: her abilities evolve with her items, and her ultimate takes her onto a target marked by her passive and shields her. Her damage mixes attacks and magic, hence builds that mix both. In our sample, Kai’Sa shows up in ≈ 15.6% of 378,251 ranked solo games and wins 49.7% of 56,453 games in bot lane.

The build that wins most

A build, here, is the order of the first three finished items. Out of the 11,597 Kai’Sa games in bot lane where those three items are known, the three most-played paths:

BuildItemsPlayedWin rate
1Kraken Slayer → Guinsoo’s Rageblade → Terminus32%≈ 52.9%
2Kraken Slayer → Guinsoo’s Rageblade → Nashor’s Tooth26%≈ 52.6%
3Statikk Shiv → Guinsoo’s Rageblade → Nashor’s Tooth13%≈ 55.3%

Kraken Slayer then Guinsoo’s Rageblade open the two most-played builds; the third item decides whether you go for attacks (Terminus) or magic (Nashor’s Tooth). The build that starts with Statikk Shiv wins a little more, on half as many games.

With build 1, the game most often starts with Doran’s Bow + 2 × Health Potion, the boots are Berserker’s Greaves (87% of games) and the skills are maxed in the order Q > E > W (95%). Most frequent next items: Zhonya’s Hourglass, Nashor’s Tooth, Phantom Dancer.

Runes and summoner spells

Press the Attack · Precision + Domination2,41846.7%

Lethal Tempo with Inspiration is played in the vast majority of games. The one page to avoid, according to the sample: Press the Attack with Domination (46.7%).

The full page most played with build 1: Lethal Tempo, Presence of Mind, Legend: Bloodline, Coup de Grace, Biscuit Delivery, Magical Footwear. Summoner spells: Flash + Barrier in 89% of games.

Matchups: the easiest and the hardest

Kai’Sa’s win rate against each opponent in the same role, compared with the champion’s usual 49.7%: the gap in points. Only matchups of at least 200 games are kept.

Easiest against

OpponentGamesWin rateGap
Ziggs411≈ 54.5%+4.8
Ezreal2,74153.8%+4.1
Kalista818≈ 53.1%+3.4

Sivir1,18445.5%−4.1
Aphelios1,82446.2%−3.5
Kog’Maw654≈ 46.3%−3.3

Against Nilah, Kai’Sa loses her clearest lane of the sample: Nilah dodges her attacks with her defensive spell and wins the melee trades. Against Sivir, Aphelios or Kog’Maw, your early damage isn’t enough to punish them: farm, wait for your first evolutions and let your support pick the fights. Against Ezreal or Ziggs, you can play aggressively as soon as your support is with you.

The most frequent mistakes

Two habits measured on the 14,036 games with a minute-by-minute timeline, then the champion’s own mistakes. These gaps go with losing without proving the cause, but the habit to build is clear.

  • Dying before 15 minutes. 54% of games have three or more deaths before the 15th minute; they win only 42.3%, against 62.0% when Kai’Sa dies once or less (25% of games). Instead: before her first evolutions, Kai’Sa trades poorly. Farm safely, and wait for your support’s engage to play forward.
  • Falling behind on farm. At 10 minutes, games with 66 minions or fewer (26%) win 41.3%; those with 82 or more (25%), 56.9%. Instead: last-hit with your attacks, and keep your missile rain for the champion when they are alone — not for clearing a wave you can take by hand.
  • Press the Attack with Domination. Press the Attack · Precision + Domination is taken in 2,418 Kai’Sa games and wins 46.7%, against 49.9% for Lethal Tempo · Precision + Inspiration. Instead: Lethal Tempo with Inspiration.
  • Diving alone with the ultimate. Your ultimate takes you to a target and protects you, but not for long: diving alone into their team means dying with your shield up. Instead: dive onto an isolated target, or once their engage and their controls are spent.
  • Firing the missile rain into the minions. Your missile rain splits between every nearby target: fired into the middle of the minions, it barely touches the champion. Instead: use it when the target is alone, or once your minions have cleared around it.
