Lux guide: build, runes, matchups and mistakes to avoid

Lux is a long-range mage played mostly as a support, but also in mid lane: her binding roots up to two targets, her wand shields every ally it passes through, and her ultimate crosses the screen. Her damage comes from poke and from her light mark, which her attacks and her ultimate detonate. In our sample, Lux shows up in ≈ 15.6% of 378,251 ranked solo games and wins 49.5% of 37,365 games as a support.

The figures in this guide come from 378,251 ranked solo games played on EUW, patches 16.18 to 16.21, read through Riot’s official API up to 24 October 2026: the same sample as Gankademy’s champion pages. “≈” marks a figure the app also gives as indicative.

Lux is also played in mid lane: 18,625 games, 51.5% won. The most-played build there is Luden’s Echo → Stormsurge → Shadowflame (30% of games, ≈ 53.0%).

The build that wins most

A build, here, is the order of the first three finished items. Out of the 3,593 Lux games as a support where those three items are known, the three most-played paths:

BuildItemsPlayedWin rate
1Luden’s Echo → Stormsurge → Shadowflame20%≈ 48.4%
2Luden’s Echo → Stormsurge → Zhonya’s Hourglass8%≈ 47.9%
3Luden’s Echo → Stormsurge → Malignance4%≈ 53.6%

As a support as in mid, Lux plays as a damage mage: Luden’s Echo then Stormsurge. As a support, Malignance as the third item wins clearly more often than Shadowflame, on few games; in mid, starting with Malignance or ending with Rabadon’s Deathcap also does better than the most-played build.

With build 1, the game most often starts with 2 × Health Potion + Stealth Ward, the boots are Sorcerer’s Shoes (97% of games) and the skills are maxed in the order E > Q > W (95%). Most frequent next items: Rabadon’s Deathcap, Zhonya’s Hourglass, Malignance.

Runes and summoner spells

The most-played rune pages of Lux as a support, by keystone and trees:

Dark Harvest · Domination + Sorcery6,26048.5%
Arcane Comet · Sorcery + Inspiration4,64850.3%
Arcane Comet · Sorcery + Precision1,24852.8%

Arcane Comet is Lux’s keystone, as a support as in mid. With Domination as the secondary tree it is by far the most-played page; Dark Harvest wins less often.

The full page most played with build 1: Arcane Comet, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch, Cheap Shot, Ultimate Hunter. Summoner spells: Flash + Ignite in 43% of games.

Matchups: the easiest and the hardest

Lux’s win rate against each opponent in the same role, compared with the champion’s usual 49.5%: the gap in points. Only matchups of at least 200 games are kept.

Easiest against

OpponentGamesWin rateGap
Mel350≈ 56.6%+7.0
Senna1,33053.8%+4.3

Hardest against

OpponentGamesWin rateGap
Ashe313≈ 43.8%−5.8
Janna922≈ 45.7%−3.9
Nami2,01546.3%−3.2
Blitzcrank1,381≈ 46.5%−3.0

As a support, Lux loses mostly to enchanters who heal and disengage — Janna, Nami —, to Ashe, who out-ranges her basic attacks, and to Blitzcrank, who punishes her the moment she steps out from behind her minions. Stay behind your minions against Blitzcrank; against the enchanters, poke their marksman rather than looking for the engage. Against Senna or Mel, your range and your binding win the lane.

In mid lane, the hardest: Ekko (≈ −4.9), LeBlanc (≈ −4.7), Xerath (≈ −4.4); the easiest: Orianna (≈ +8.8), Sylas (+7.7), Akali (≈ +3.7).

The most frequent mistakes

Two habits measured on the 9,255 games with a minute-by-minute timeline, then the champion’s own mistakes. These gaps go with losing without proving the cause, but the habit to build is clear.

  • Dying before 15 minutes. 54% of games have three or more deaths before the 15th minute; they win only 42.4%, against 63.6% when Lux dies once or less (24% of games). Instead: Lux has no escape but her binding and Flash. Poke from the edge of your range, and step back as soon as their engage support comes out of the fog.
  • Placing too few wards. Games where Lux places 8 wards or fewer before 15 minutes (27%) win 46.1%; those with 12 or more (31%), 51.8%. Instead: ward the river brush before every trade and before every objective, with a control ward in your bag — your binding is worth twice as much when you see them coming.
  • Ignite by default. Flash + Ignite is taken in 43% of Lux’s support games and wins 48.1%; Flash + Heal wins 51.1%. Instead: Heal, which also saves your marksman.
  • Throwing the binding first, from too close. Your binding is your only defence: wasting it on poke leaves you with no answer to their engage. Instead: poke with your light zone, and keep the binding for the enemy who engages or for a sure target.
  • Casting the ultimate at a free target. Your ultimate reaches very far, but leaves after a short delay: cast at a target free to move, it misses. Instead: cast it at a target already held by your binding or an ally’s control, or to finish a target running in a straight line.
