Thresh guide: build, runes, matchups and mistakes to avoid
Thresh is a control support: his hook catches a target, which he can then reach in one leap; his lantern pulls an ally to him and shields them; his flay pushes away or pulls in whatever comes close. He gains armour and power by collecting the souls of enemies who fall near him. In our sample, Thresh shows up in ≈ 13.1% of 378,251 ranked solo games and wins 51.4% of 49,169 games as a support.

The build that wins most
A build, here, is the order of the first three finished items. Out of the 5,438 Thresh games as a support where those three items are known, the three most-played paths:
| Build | Items | Played | Win rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Locket of the Iron Solari → Knight’s Vow → Zeke’s Convergence | 15% | ≈ 58.7% |
| 2 | Locket of the Iron Solari → Knight’s Vow → Thornmail | 7% | ≈ 56.7% |
| 3 | Locket of the Iron Solari → Zeke’s Convergence → Thornmail | 7% | ≈ 54.1% |
Locket of the Iron Solari first is unanimous. Then Knight’s Vow as the second item wins more often than Zeke’s Convergence: it binds you to your marksman and protects whoever deals the damage.
With build 1, the game most often starts with 2 × Health Potion + Stealth Ward, the boots are Boots of Swiftness (81% of games) and the skills are maxed in the order Q > E > W (90%). Most frequent next items: Thornmail, Frozen Heart, Bandlepipes.
Runes and summoner spells
The most-played rune pages of Thresh as a support, by keystone and trees:
| Page | Games | Win rate |
|---|---|---|
| Aftershock · Resolve + Inspiration | 24,626 | 51.4% |
| Guardian · Resolve + Inspiration | 13,554 | 52.6% |
| Glacial Augment · Inspiration + Resolve | 8,408 | 50.3% |
| Aftershock · Resolve + Domination | 589 | 49.7% |

The full page most played with build 1: Aftershock, Font of Life, Bone Plating, Unflinching, Biscuit Delivery, Cosmic Insight. Summoner spells: Flash + Ignite in 67% of games.
Matchups: the easiest and the hardest
Thresh’s win rate against each opponent in the same role, compared with the champion’s usual 51.4%: the gap in points. Only matchups of at least 200 games are kept.
Easiest against
| Opponent | Games | Win rate | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ashe | 348 | 60.3% | +8.9 |
| Yuumi | 1,184 | 56.8% | +5.3 |
| Bard | 938 | 56.6% | +5.2 |
| Pantheon | 794 | ≈ 54.9% | +3.5 |
Hardest against
| Opponent | Games | Win rate | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sona | 553 | ≈ 45.9% | −5.5 |
| Rell | 870 | ≈ 47.9% | −3.5 |
| Alistar | 1,229 | ≈ 48.1% | −3.4 |
| Janna | 1,446 | ≈ 48.3% | −3.1 |
Thresh suffers against supports who disengage or heal — Janna, Sona — and against engages that land before his, such as Rell or Alistar. Against them, don’t throw your hook into empty space: wait until their disengage or their engage is down. Against Yuumi or Bard, the lane is yours: their marksman stays exposed to your hook and your flay.
The most frequent mistakes
Two habits measured on the 12,346 games with a minute-by-minute timeline, then the champion’s own mistakes. These gaps go with losing without proving the cause, but the habit to build is clear.
- Dying before 15 minutes. 49% of games have three or more deaths before the 15th minute; they win only 42.5%, against 65.1% when Thresh dies once or less (28% of games). Instead: a support who dies early leaves his marksman alone. Throw your hook from behind your minions, and only follow it in when your marksman can follow you.
- Placing too few wards. Games where Thresh places 8 wards or fewer before 15 minutes (27%) win 48.4%; those with 12 or more (32%), 52.8%. Instead: ward the river and the lane brush before every trade, and light up the objective a minute before it spawns — your hook needs to see its target.
- Going for Glacial Augment. Glacial Augment · Inspiration + Resolve is taken in 8,408 Thresh games and wins 50.3%; Guardian wins 52.6%. Instead: Guardian or Aftershock.
- Throwing the hook without a plan. A missed hook leaves your marksman alone for long seconds. Instead: throw it when the target can’t dodge — after a control, at the end of a dash, when they walk up for a last hit — and only if your marksman can follow.
- Throwing the lantern too late. Your lantern saves the ally who clicks it: thrown too late or too far from them, it is lost. Instead: throw it towards your ally before they get caught, and tell them in lane — they need to know to click it.
