Viego guide: build, runes, matchups and mistakes to avoid

Viego is a jungler who steals bodies: when an enemy champion he has just hit dies, he can possess them, use their spells for a while and get health back. His mist camouflages him along a wall, and his ultimate makes him swoop onto a wounded enemy. In our sample, Viego shows up in ≈ 10.4% of 378,251 ranked solo games and wins 49.6% of 38,264 games in the jungle.

The build that wins most

A build, here, is the order of the first three finished items. Out of the 7,477 Viego games in the jungle where those three items are known, the three most-played paths:

BuildItemsPlayedWin rate
1Kraken Slayer → The Collector → Immortal Shieldbow27%≈ 53.1%
2Hubris → The Collector → Lord Dominik’s Regards11%≈ 51.5%
3Kraken Slayer → The Collector → Lord Dominik’s Regards10%≈ 56.9%

Kraken Slayer then The Collector is the most-played start; ending with Lord Dominik’s Regards rather than Immortal Shieldbow wins more often, on fewer games.

With build 1, the game most often starts with Gustwalker Hatchling + Health Potion + Stealth Ward, the boots are Plated Steelcaps (55% of games) and the skills are maxed in the order Q > E > W (91%). Most frequent next items: Lord Dominik’s Regards, Infinity Edge, Guardian Angel.

Runes and summoner spells

The most-played rune pages of Viego in the jungle, by keystone and trees:

Conqueror · Precision + Inspiration11,30548.6%
Conqueror · Precision + Domination4,82247.1%
Hail of Blades · Domination + Inspiration38951.9%

Hail of Blades is both the most-played and the best-winning page: over two points above Conqueror, which drops further with Domination.

The full page most played with build 1: Conqueror, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, Coup de Grace, Cosmic Insight, Magical Footwear; around Hail of Blades: Hail of Blades, Sudden Impact, Sixth Sense, Treasure Hunter, Legend: Alacrity, Triumph. Summoner spells: Flash + Smite in over 99% of games.

Matchups: the easiest and the hardest

Viego’s win rate against each opponent in the same role, compared with the champion’s usual 49.6%: the gap in points. Only matchups of at least 200 games are kept.

Viego suffers against junglers who win the early duel or clear faster — Bel’Veth, Zac — and against Evelynn and Karthus, who beat him to the map. Against them, don’t look for the duel in their jungle: play near your lanes that have priority and be there for the fight, where your possession makes the difference. Against Rengar, Xin Zhao or Vi, you win the skirmishes: follow them and punish their dives.

The most frequent mistakes

Two habits measured on the 9,558 games with a minute-by-minute timeline, then the champion’s own mistakes. These gaps go with losing without proving the cause, but the habit to build is clear.

  • Dying before 15 minutes. 36% of games have three or more deaths before the 15th minute; they win only 34.8%, against 63.0% when Viego dies once or less (38% of games). Instead: Viego is strong in fights where his lanes are with him, weak alone. Before invading or entering a fight, check that your nearest lanes can follow.
  • Falling behind on farm. At 10 minutes, games with 63 minions and monsters or fewer (26%) win 40.4%; those with 76 or more (26%), 58.1%. Instead: clear your camps in a full path before looking for a gank, and come back to them between two plays — a jungler who misses his camps falls behind on levels.
  • Conqueror instead of Hail of Blades. Conqueror · Precision + Inspiration is taken in 11,305 Viego games and wins 48.6%; with Domination, 47.1%. Hail of Blades · Domination + Precision wins 50.8%. Instead: Hail of Blades.
  • Possessing to stay in a lost fight. Possessing an enemy gives you their spells for a while, not a way out. Instead: possess to carry on a fight you are winning, not to stay in one that is lost.
  • Engaging in open ground. Your mist needs a wall, and it is what makes you hard to target. Instead: pick your fight near a wall or a brush, where your mist covers your entry.
