Caitlyn guide: build, runes, matchups and mistakes to avoid

Caitlyn has the longest basic-attack range of the marksmen: she rules her lane by hitting from afar, lays traps that hold whoever steps on them, and jumps back with her net. Her headshot, which charges faster from a brush, hurts a lot in the early game. In our sample, Caitlyn shows up in ≈ 18.5% of 378,251 ranked solo games and wins 49.5% of 68,656 games in bot lane.

The build that wins most

A build, here, is the order of the first three finished items. Out of the 12,661 Caitlyn games in bot lane where those three items are known, the three most-played paths:

BuildItemsPlayedWin rate
1Hexoptics C44 → Infinity Edge → Lord Dominik’s Regards25%≈ 55.3%
2Hexoptics C44 → Infinity Edge → Rapid Firecannon24%≈ 54.0%
3The Collector → Infinity Edge → Lord Dominik’s Regards16%≈ 56.1%

Hexoptics C44 then Infinity Edge: the two most-played builds share the same start, only the third item changes. Starting with The Collector (build 3) wins a little more often, on fewer games.

With build 1, the game most often starts with Doran’s Bow + 2 × Health Potion + Stealth Ward, the boots are Berserker’s Greaves (87% of games) and the skills are maxed in the order Q > W > E (91%). Most frequent next items: Rapid Firecannon, Bloodthirster, Guardian Angel.

Matchups: the easiest and the hardest

Caitlyn’s win rate against each opponent in the same role, compared with the champion’s usual 49.5%: the gap in points. Only matchups of at least 200 games are kept.

Hwei38041.8%−7.6
Vel’Koz213≈ 43.7%−5.8
Veigar636≈ 44.8%−4.7

Caitlyn’s hardest matchups aren’t marksmen: they are mages played in bot lane — Swain, Hwei, Veigar — who hold the lane from range and punish every step forward. Against them your range is not enough: farm behind your minions, keep your net to dodge their engage and lay your traps where they have to walk. Against Ezreal or Samira, your range sets the rules: push your lead and take the tower plates.

The most frequent mistakes

Two habits measured on the 17,327 games with a minute-by-minute timeline, then the champion’s own mistakes. These gaps go with losing without proving the cause, but the habit to build is clear.

  • Dying before 15 minutes. 55% of games have three or more deaths before the 15th minute; they win only 41.3%, against 63.7% when Caitlyn dies once or less (23% of games). Instead: your range lets you trade without taking damage — use it, and stay behind your minions when the enemy support has a hook or an engage ready.
  • Falling behind on farm. At 10 minutes, games with 69 minions or fewer (26%) win 40.9%; those with 84 or more (28%), 57.6%. Instead: Caitlyn can last-hit from further away than anyone in bot lane. Take every safe last hit, and use your traps to cover yourself while you farm.
  • The default rune page. Lethal Tempo · Precision + Sorcery is taken in 45,492 games and wins 49.1%; the same keystone with Inspiration wins 51.1%. Instead: try Inspiration as your secondary tree.
  • Netting forward to chase. Your net throws Caitlyn backwards: used to catch up with a target, it leaves you with no escape when the enemy support engages. Instead: keep it to jump away from their engage, and use it aggressively only when their key spell is down.
  • Throwing traps anywhere. A trap holds and reveals whoever walks on it: dropped at random, it is lost. Instead: in lane, put them in the brushes and under the target you have just slowed; before an objective, on the paths the enemy has to take.
