Cho’Gath guide: build, runes, matchups and mistakes to avoid
Cho’Gath is a monster who grows: each kill with Feast, his ultimate, makes him bigger and gives him health. His Rupture knocks up an area after a short delay, his scream silences, and his passive heals him every time he kills a unit. In our sample: picked in ≈ 11.3% of 378,251 ranked games, 51.5% won over 25,697 games in the jungle.

Matchups: the easiest and the hardest
Cho’Gath’s win rate against each opponent in the same role, against the usual 51.5%: the gap in points, from 200 games.
Easiest against
| Opponent | Games | Win rate | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
Hecarim | 577 | 58.9% | +7.4 |

|---|---|---|---|
Amumu | 579 | ≈ 45.4% | −6.1 |
Kayn | 1,231 | ≈ 49.0% | −2.6 |
In the jungle, the hardest matchups are Amumu and Kayn, who deal damage based on maximum health — Amumu with his despair, Kayn in his red form: the more you grow, the more it hurts. Avoid long fights in their jungle; play around your lanes and the objectives, where Feast and Smite have the last word. Hecarim, Lee Sin and Vi have to come into melee range: your scream silences them as they arrive. In top lane, Dr. Mundo is his worst matchup.
In top lane, the hardest:
Dr. Mundo (−9.2),
Gwen (≈ −6.6),
Illaoi (≈ −6.1); the easiest:
Tryndamere (≈ +6.1),
Malphite (≈ +3.7).

The most frequent mistakes
Two habits measured on the 6,359 games with a timeline, then the champion’s own mistakes. These gaps go with losing without proving the cause.
- Dying before 15 minutes. 31% of games have three or more deaths before the 15th minute; they win only 34.3%, against 64.9% when Cho’Gath dies once or less (41% of games). Instead: Cho’Gath has no dash, and his Rupture lands late. Gank lanes where your laner can hold the enemy for you, and refuse a duel in your jungle against a jungler who is stronger early.
- Falling behind on farm. At 10 minutes, games with 62 minions and monsters or fewer (26%) win 43.9%; those with 75 or more (26%), 60.0%. Instead: your passive heals you each time you kill a unit, so you can chain your camps without going back: clear them in a full path before ganking, and come back to them between two plays.
- Sorcery behind
Hail of Blades. Hail of Blades · Domination + Sorcery is taken in 15,419 Cho’Gath jungle games and wins 50.9%; the same keystone with Inspiration wins 52.7%. Instead: Inspiration as your secondary tree. - Throwing Rupture at a target free to move. Your Rupture erupts after a short delay: thrown at a champion who can still move, it misses, and the gank is over. Instead: throw it where the target is going, or once your laner has stopped them.
- Casting Feast on the objective too early. Feast deals heavy damage to monsters: cast too early, it leaves the dragon or Baron within reach of the enemy’s Smite. Instead: keep Feast and Smite for the moment the objective is low enough for both.
