Sett guide: build, runes, matchups and mistakes to avoid
Sett is a bare-fisted brawler who regenerates more health the more he is missing. Every hit he takes fills his grit, which his W releases as a huge punch and a shield; his E slams together the enemies on both sides, and his ultimate carries a champion and slams them onto their allies. In our sample: picked in ≈ 9.0% of 378,251 ranked games, 51.8% won over 31,819 games in top lane.

Strengths and weaknesses
Strengths
- His W turns the damage he takes into damage and a shield.
- His E stuns the enemies caught on both sides.
- His ultimate hurts a whole group, harder with a tank in his arms.
Weaknesses
- No dash: he has to walk to his targets.
- Opponents who refuse to trade — Singed, Kayle — leave his W empty.
- Illaoi wins the fight among her tentacles.

The build that wins most
A build, here, is the order of the first three finished items. Out of the 4,625 Sett games in top lane where they are known, the three most-played paths:
| Build | Items | Played | Win rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Cleaver | › ›![]() | 37% | ≈ 60.5% |
| Early Bloodmail | › ›![]() | 12% | ≈ 59.1% |
| Cleaver and Sterak’s | › ›![]() | 5% | ≈ 56.8% |
All three builds open with
Stridebreaker. The most played,
Black Cleaver then
Overlord’s Bloodmail, also wins most (≈ 60.5%);
Overlord’s Bloodmail then
Sterak’s Gage wins almost as much (≈ 59.1%), and
Black Cleaver then
Sterak’s Gage wins less (≈ 56.8%).
With build 1, the game most often starts with
Doran’s Blade +
Health Potion, and the boots are
Plated Steelcaps (57% of games).

Grasp of the Undying Resolve + Precision | 1,479 | 49.0% |

Conqueror · Precision + Resolve is Sett’s page in nearly three games out of four, and
Press the Attack with the same trees wins just as often (52.5%).
Grasp of the Undying and
Hail of Blades win clearly less (49.0% and 45.7%).

Conqueror, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, Last Stand, Second Wind, UnflinchingSummoner spells:
Flash + Ignite in 89% of games.
Matchups: the easiest and the hardest
Sett’s win rate against each opponent in the same role, against the usual 51.8%: the gap in points, from 200 games.
Easiest against
| Opponent | Games | Win rate | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
K’Sante | 308 | ≈ 58.4% | +6.6 |
Yasuo | 474 | ≈ 56.3% | +4.5 |
Irelia | 630 | ≈ 55.9% | +4.1 |
Yone | 1,363 | ≈ 55.0% | +3.2 |
Hardest against
| Opponent | Games | Win rate | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
Singed | 380 | ≈ 46.6% | −5.2 |
Kayle | 524 | ≈ 46.9% | −4.9 |
Zaahen | 411 | ≈ 47.4% | −4.4 |
Illaoi | 653 | ≈ 47.8% | −4.0 |
Sett’s hardest lanes give his grit nothing to work with: Singed runs away through his poison trail, Kayle turns ranged as she levels up, Illaoi wins any fight among her tentacles, and Zaahen also beats him in the sample. Don’t chase Singed, punish Kayle early, and leave Illaoi’s ultimate rather than trading inside it. Against K’Sante, Yasuo, Irelia or Yone, who must come into melee, let them hit, then punch back with your W.

The most frequent mistakes
Two habits measured on the 7,955 games with a timeline, then the champion’s own mistakes. These gaps go with losing without proving the cause.
- Dying before 15 minutes. 56% of games have three or more deaths before the 15th minute; they win only 45.0%, against 64.3% when Sett dies once or less (22% of games). Instead: Sett has no dash, and his W is both his damage and his shield. Keep it for the gank or the all-in, not for a wave, and walk back when it is down.
- Falling behind on farm. At 10 minutes, games with 56 minions or fewer (25%) win 44.0%; those with 74 or more (27%), 59.5%. Instead: last-hit with your punches and keep your W and your E for the champion: wasted on the wave, they leave you with no answer when their jungler shows up.
Grasp of the Undying instead of
Conqueror. Grasp of the Undying · Resolve + Precision is taken in 1,479 Sett games and wins 49.0%, against 52.0% for Conqueror · Precision + Resolve. Instead:
Conqueror or
Press the Attack.- Facebreaker with nothing on the other side. Your E only stuns when there are enemies on both sides of you; otherwise it only slows. Instead: put the champion on one side and a minion or another enemy on the other, then cast it.
- Grabbing the wrong target with the ultimate. Your ultimate hurts every enemy around the landing spot, harder the more bonus health the champion you carry has. Instead: grab their tank and drop them onto their carries, rather than wasting it on a fragile target your fists can kill.

Questions
What is the best Sett build?
The most-played build in top lane is Stridebreaker → Black Cleaver → Overlord’s Bloodmail (37% of games with three items finished, ≈ 60.5% won). It is also the one of the three that wins most often. These win rates only count those games: compare them with each other, not with 50%.
Which runes should Sett take?
Conqueror · Precision + Resolve is the most-played page (23,260 games, 52.0% won). It is also, within half a point, the one that wins most among the pages played at least 1,000 times.
How does Sett’s W work?
It spends the grit stored from the damage Sett took: true damage in the center of the punch, physical on its edges, and a shield that grows with the grit spent. Take their burst first, then aim the center at them.
