Garen guide: build, runes, matchups and mistakes to avoid
Garen is a fighter with no mana: his Q speeds him up, frees him from slows and silences his next target, his W cuts the damage he takes, and his spin hits everything around him. His ultimate executes a wounded enemy, and he regenerates health after a few seconds without taking damage. In our sample: picked in ≈ 10.2% of 378,251 ranked games, 51.6% won over 36,315 games in top lane.

The build that wins most
A build, here, is the order of the first three finished items. Out of the 6,342 Garen games in top lane where they are known, the three most-played paths:
| Build | Items | Played | Win rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anti-heal | › ›![]() | 24% | ≈ 56.5% |
| Dead Man’s Plate | › ›![]() | 10% | ≈ 54.9% |
| Early anti-heal | › ›![]() | 7% | ≈ 55.6% |
All three builds start with
Stridebreaker and include
Phantom Dancer: Garen’s spin rewards attack speed and critical strikes. Finishing with
Mortal Reminder wins most (≈ 56.5%), with
Dead Man’s Plate least (≈ 54.9%);
Mortal Reminder before
Phantom Dancer sits in between (≈ 55.6%).
With build 1, the game most often starts with
Doran’s Shield +
Health Potion, and the boots are
Berserker’s Greaves (84% of games).

Matchups: the easiest and the hardest
Garen’s win rate against each opponent in the same role, against the usual 51.6%: the gap in points, from 200 games.
Easiest against
| Opponent | Games | Win rate | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
Jayce | 274 | 62.8% | +11.2 |
K’Sante | 320 | 59.4% | +7.8 |
Riven | 491 | 58.0% | +6.5 |
Jax | 1,455 | 56.0% | +4.4 |
Hardest against
| Opponent | Games | Win rate | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
Kayle | 821 | 44.0% | −7.6 |
Tryndamere | 1,040 | ≈ 47.8% | −3.8 |
Camille | 825 | ≈ 48.4% | −3.2 |
Sett | 1,790 | ≈ 48.5% | −3.1 |
Garen’s hardest lanes deny his execute or win the short trades: Kayle turns ranged as she levels up and can make herself untouchable, Tryndamere cannot die while his ultimate lasts, Camille’s charged strike deals true damage, and Sett’s W feeds on your spin. Never ult a target that can’t die, and spin only once Sett’s W is down. Against Jayce, K’Sante, Riven or Jax, your silence cuts their combo: walk at them with your Q.

The most frequent mistakes
Two habits measured on the 8,956 games with a timeline, then the champion’s own mistakes. These gaps go with losing without proving the cause.
- Dying before 15 minutes. 44% of games have three or more deaths before the 15th minute; they win only 41.9%, against 60.7% when Garen dies once or less (34% of games). Instead: your passive only heals you while you take no damage — after a trade, step out of reach of their minions and their poke. Keep your Q to get away: it removes slows.
- Falling behind on farm. At 10 minutes, games with 61 minions or fewer (26%) win 42.5%; those with 79 or more (27%), 58.9%. Instead: last-hit with your attacks and keep the spin for trades, or for a wave you want to push before going back: a wave pushed under their tower leaves you exposed to their jungler.
Conqueror with Sorcery by habit. Conqueror · Precision + Sorcery is taken in 17,308 games and wins 51.0%; Stormraider’s Surge · Sorcery + Resolve wins 53.4% on 10,611 games. Instead: try
Stormraider’s Surge with Resolve.- Casting the ultimate too early. Your ultimate hits harder the more health the target is missing: cast early, it leaves them alive, and against Tryndamere or Kayle it can be wasted. Instead: finish the trade with your spin and keep the ultimate for the last blow, once their own ultimate has ended.
- Spinning in without your Q. Garen has no dash: the speed of his Q brings him to the target and silences it. Spent on a minion, it lets a ranged opponent walk away from your spin. Instead: open with your Q on the champion, then spin.
