Wukong guide: build, runes, matchups and mistakes to avoid

Wukong is a melee diver: his E dashes him onto a target, his W sends him dashing away, unseen for a moment, leaving a clone in his place, and his ultimate is a spin that knocks up every enemy around him. In our sample: picked in ≈ 8.4% of 378,251 ranked games, 52.3% won over 27,690 games in the jungle.

  • His W leaves a clone in his place while he slips away unseen.

The build that wins most

A build, here, is the order of the first three finished items. Out of the 4,644 Wukong games in the jungle where they are known, the three most-played paths:

BuildItemsPlayedWin rate
Death’s DanceTrinity ForceBlack CleaverDeath’s Dance48%≈ 58.1%
Guardian AngelTrinity ForceBlack CleaverGuardian Angel9%≈ 62.7%
Anti-magicTrinity ForceBlack CleaverMaw of Malmortius8%≈ 51.0%

Trinity Force then Black Cleaver open all three most-played builds; only the third item changes. Death’s Dance, by far the most common, is the reference; Guardian Angel wins even more often, on far fewer games, and Maw of Malmortius, bought against magic damage, wins least.

With build 1, the game most often starts with Scorchclaw Pup + Health Potion + Stealth Ward, and the boots are Plated Steelcaps (59% of games).

Matchups: the easiest and the hardest

Amumu543≈ 47.0%−5.3

Wukong’s hardest matchups are tanks who soak his dive and answer with crowd control — Volibear, Cho’Gath, Amumu — and Lillia, who runs from his dive and puts to sleep whoever she has marked. Against them, dive only once their control is down. Against Zed, Lee Sin, Hecarim or Rengar, who must come close to fight, your ultimate knocks up whoever dives in: wait for their entry, then spin.

The most frequent mistakes

Two habits measured on the 6,901 games with a timeline, then the champion’s own mistakes. These gaps go with losing without proving the cause.

  • Dying before 15 minutes. 52% of games have two or more deaths before the 15th minute; they win only 42.5%, against 64.2% when Wukong dies once or less (48% of games). Instead: early on, Wukong wins skirmishes near his lanes, not long duels in the enemy jungle. Check where their jungler last showed before you invade, close in with your E when you gank, and keep your W to get out.
  • Falling behind on farm. At 10 minutes, games with 62 minions and monsters or fewer (28%) win 45.7%; those with 74 or more (25%), 61.7%. Instead: Wukong’s power comes with Trinity Force. Clear full paths before your first gank and between two plays: the sooner you have it, the sooner your dives work.
  • Electrocute instead of Conqueror. Electrocute · Domination + Precision is taken in 618 Wukong games and wins 48.1%, against 52.7% for Conqueror · Precision + Inspiration. Instead: Conqueror.
  • Spinning on the frontline. Your ultimate knocks up every enemy around you: cast next to their tank alone, it stops the one enemy who can take it. Instead: dash onto their carries with your E, or wait for their team to group, then spin.
  • Spending the W to get in. Your W is your best way out: a dash and a moment unseen. Used to enter, it leaves you stuck in their team. Instead: go in with your E, and keep the W to leave or to dodge their key spell.
