Kayn guide: build, runes, matchups and mistakes to avoid
Kayn is a jungler who walks through walls with his Shadow Step and changes form mid-game: fighting melee champions leads to Rhaast, a darkin who heals from his spells’ damage; fighting ranged ones leads to the Shadow Assassin, who opens fights with a burst. His ultimate hides him inside an enemy he has just hit, before he bursts out. In our sample: picked in ≈ 9.5% of 378,251 ranked games, 49.5% won over 34,044 games in the jungle.

Strengths and weaknesses
Strengths
- His Shadow Step takes him through walls: he picks his angle of attack.
- His form follows the enemy team: Rhaast against melee, the Shadow Assassin against ranged.
- His ultimate makes him untargetable inside an enemy he has just hit.
Weaknesses
- Weak before his transformation.
- Junglers who win the early duel (Bel’Veth, Udyr) trouble him.
- His ultimate needs an enemy he has just hit.

The build that wins most
A build, here, is the order of the first three finished items. Out of the 6,607 Kayn games in the jungle where they are known, the three most-played paths:
| Build | Items | Played | Win rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cyclosword first | › ›![]() | 11% | ≈ 55.0% |
| Lethality | › ›![]() | 7% | ≈ 51.0% |
| Eclipse first | › ›![]() | 5% | ≈ 53.3% |
Voltaic Cyclosword → Black Cleaver → Death’s Dance is both the most-played path and the one that wins most (≈ 55.0%). Full lethality —
Hubris,
Voltaic Cyclosword, then
Axiom Arc — wins least (≈ 51.0%); starting with
Eclipse sits in between.
With build 1, the game most often starts with
Scorchclaw Pup +
Health Potion +
Stealth Ward, and the boots are
Plated Steelcaps (62% of games).

Matchups: the easiest and the hardest
Kayn’s win rate against each opponent in the same role, against the usual 49.5%: the gap in points, from 200 games.
Easiest against
| Opponent | Games | Win rate | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
Nidalee | 230 | ≈ 57.8% | +8.3 |
Zed | 292 | ≈ 54.5% | +4.9 |
Rengar | 653 | ≈ 53.4% | +3.9 |
Hardest against
| Opponent | Games | Win rate | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
Bel’Veth | 521 | ≈ 44.1% | −5.4 |
Udyr | 355 | ≈ 45.1% | −4.5 |
Fiddlesticks | 448 | ≈ 45.3% | −4.2 |
Wukong | 1,414 | ≈ 46.3% | −3.2 |
Kayn’s hardest matchups: Bel’Veth and Udyr, who win the early duel and punish him before his transformation; Fiddlesticks, whose fear punishes the fight Kayn walks into; and Wukong, whose ultimate knocks up whoever dives onto him. Against them, don’t contest your jungle early: farm your side, track their jungler and fight where your lanes can follow. Against Nidalee, Zed or Rengar, who live on a burst, you come out ahead: keep your ultimate to slip out of their combo.

The most frequent mistakes
Two habits measured on the 8,655 games with a timeline, then the champion’s own mistakes. These gaps go with losing without proving the cause.
- Dying before 15 minutes. 46% of games have three or more deaths before the 15th minute; they win only 38.3%, against 63.6% when Kayn dies once or less (28% of games). Instead: before his transformation, Kayn duels poorly. Don’t answer an invade alone, gank lanes where your laner can hold the target, and come in through a wall, where they don’t expect you.
- Falling behind on farm. At 10 minutes, games with 60 minions and monsters or fewer (25%) win 42.6%; those with 73 or more (27%), 56.9%. Instead: your Shadow Step cuts through the walls between camps. Clear a full path before your first gank, and come back to your camps between two plays.
Dark Harvest by habit. Dark Harvest · Domination + Inspiration is taken in 11,145 Kayn games and wins 48.0%; Conqueror · Precision + Inspiration wins 50.8%, and Stormraider’s Surge · Sorcery + Domination 51.0%. Instead:
Conqueror with Inspiration, or
Stormraider’s Surge.- Ulting at the start of the fight. Your ultimate makes you untargetable inside an enemy you have just hit: cast to open, it wastes your best dodge. Instead: keep it for their key spell, or to finish a target that runs.
- Farming without ever fighting. The orbs that decide your form come from fighting champions: a Kayn who never ganks transforms late. Instead: gank and skirmish between clears, hitting the champions whose orbs you want — melee for Rhaast, ranged for the Shadow Assassin.

Questions
What is the best Kayn build?
The most-played build in the jungle is Voltaic Cyclosword → Black Cleaver → Death’s Dance (11% of games with three items finished, ≈ 55.0% won). It is also the one of the three that wins most often. These win rates only count those games: compare them with each other, not with 50%.
Which runes should Kayn take?
Dark Harvest · Domination + Inspiration is the most-played page (11,145 games, 48.0% won). Among the pages played at least 1,000 times, the one that wins most is Stormraider’s Surge · Sorcery + Domination (51.0%).
Can Kayn skip Flash?
Some players do: Smite + Ignite is taken in 6% of Kayn’s games and wins 52.7%, against 49.3% for Flash + Smite. His Shadow Step already crosses walls and Ignite helps finish his target: worth a try, on far fewer games though.
