Darius guide: build, runes, matchups and mistakes to avoid
Darius is a lane bully with no dash: his attacks and abilities make enemies bleed, and a full bleed makes him much stronger. His axe swing heals him for each champion hit by the blade, his pull drags back whoever leaves, and his ultimate executes a bleeding target, then comes back if it kills. In our sample: picked in ≈ 10.1% of 378,251 ranked games, 49.2% won over 32,642 games in top lane.

The build that wins most
A build, here, is the order of the first three finished items. Out of the 5,253 Darius games in top lane where they are known, the three most-played paths:
| Build | Items | Played | Win rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Death’s Dance | › ›![]() | 16% | ≈ 57.6% |
| Force of Nature | › ›![]() | 10% | ≈ 53.7% |

All three builds start with
Youmuu’s Ghostblade then
Dead Man’s Plate: speed to stick to his targets. Only the third item changes:
Death’s Dance wins most (≈ 57.6%),
Sterak’s Gage comes next (≈ 55.3%), and
Force of Nature, bought against magic damage, wins least (≈ 53.7%).
With build 1, the game most often starts with
Doran’s Blade +
Health Potion, and the boots are
Plated Steelcaps (73% of games).

Matchups: the easiest and the hardest
Darius’s win rate against each opponent in the same role, against the usual 49.2%: the gap in points, from 200 games.
Easiest against
| Opponent | Games | Win rate | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
Yasuo | 481 | 56.3% | +7.1 |
K’Sante | 301 | ≈ 56.1% | +6.9 |
Trundle | 332 | ≈ 55.1% | +5.9 |
Sion | 580 | ≈ 54.8% | +5.6 |
Hardest against
| Opponent | Games | Win rate | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
Dr. Mundo | 949 | 43.9% | −5.3 |
Sett | 1,898 | 45.1% | −4.1 |
Volibear | 1,065 | ≈ 45.5% | −3.7 |
Renekton | 791 | ≈ 46.1% | −3.1 |
Darius loses most to those who outlast his bleed or refuse the long fight: Dr. Mundo heals through it, Sett turns your damage into his W, Volibear wins the long brawl, and Renekton dashes in and out before your bleed is stacked. Keep your pull for when they leave, trade when Mundo’s ultimate or Sett’s W is down, and don’t chase Renekton. Against Yasuo, K’Sante, Trundle or Sion, stack your bleed in melee, then execute.

The most frequent mistakes
Two habits measured on the 8,164 games with a timeline, then the champion’s own mistakes. These gaps go with losing without proving the cause.
- Dying before 15 minutes. 54% of games have three or more deaths before the 15th minute; they win only 40.6%, against 62.5% when Darius dies once or less (25% of games). Instead: with no dash, every chase must end within reach of your pull. Check where their jungler is before pushing, and when a ranged opponent kites you, step back rather than following.
- Falling behind on farm. At 10 minutes, games with 60 minions or fewer (25%) win 39.9%; those with 78 or more (27%), 58.4%. Instead: let the wave come to you and last-hit near your tower — your opponent then has to step into your pull to farm. Push with your swing only before going back.
Force of Nature by default. The build ending with
Force of Nature wins ≈ 53.7% on 10% of games; with
Death’s Dance third, ≈ 57.6%. Instead:
Death’s Dance, and
Force of Nature only against mostly magic damage.- Hitting with the handle. Your swing heals you and hurts most with its blade, at the edge of the circle: point-blank, the target only takes the handle. Instead: cast it when the target stands at the edge — as they walk away, or after a step back.
- Ulting before the bleed is stacked. Your ultimate hits harder for every bleed stack on the target, and comes back when it kills. Cast too early, it does neither. Instead: stack your bleed first, then cast it to finish — and look for the next target at once.
