Nami guide: build, runes, matchups and mistakes to avoid

Nami is an enchanter who trades as well as she heals: her bubble lands after a short delay and holds every enemy under it, her W bounces between allies and enemies, healing the one and hurting the other, and her blessing makes an ally’s next hits slow their target. Her ultimate is a wave that knocks up every enemy in its path. In our sample: picked in ≈ 10.1% of 378,251 ranked games, 52.1% won over 38,167 games as a support.

Strengths and weaknesses

Strengths

  • Her bubble holds every enemy it lands on.
  • Her W heals an ally and hurts an enemy in the same cast.
  • Her ultimate knocks up every enemy in its path.

Weaknesses

  • No dash: her bubble and Flash are her only answer to an engage.
  • Her bubble lands after a delay: a target free to move dodges it.
  • Engage supports who reach her first (Leona, Blitzcrank) are her hardest lanes.

The build that wins most

A build, here, is the order of the first three finished items. Out of the 4,270 Nami games as a support where they are known, the three most-played paths:

BuildItemsPlayedWin rate
Moonstone firstEchoes of HeliaMoonstone RenewerArdent Censer16%≈ 56.5%
Censer firstEchoes of HeliaArdent CenserMoonstone Renewer9%≈ 59.0%
Flowing WaterEchoes of HeliaMoonstone RenewerStaff of Flowing Water4%≈ 59.8%

Echoes of Helia opens all three most-played builds. The most common follow-up, Moonstone Renewer then Ardent Censer, wins least of the three: taking Ardent Censer before Moonstone Renewer wins more often (≈ 59.0% against ≈ 56.5%), and ending with Staff of Flowing Water also does better, on far fewer games.

With build 1, the game most often starts with 2 × Health Potion + Stealth Ward, and the boots are Ionian Boots of Lucidity (98% of games).

Summon Aery is Nami’s keystone in the vast majority of games, mostly with Resolve behind it; with Inspiration, it wins a little more. Electrocute, her only other keystone among the most-played pages, wins clearly less (48.4%).

Matchups: the easiest and the hardest

Nami’s win rate against each opponent in the same role, against the usual 52.1%: the gap in points, from 200 games.

Blitzcrank1,329≈ 48.5%−3.6
Braum904≈ 48.9%−3.2
Milio1,523≈ 49.1%−3.0

Nami’s hardest lanes are the engage supports who reach her first — Leona, Blitzcrank —, Braum, and Milio, whose ultimate frees and heals his allies. Against Blitzcrank, stay behind your minions; against Leona, keep your bubble for the moment she lands. Against Ashe, Maokai or Xerath, the lane is yours: Ashe and Xerath have no dash to dodge your bubble.

The most frequent mistakes

Two habits measured on the 9,473 games with a timeline, then the champion’s own mistakes. These gaps go with losing without proving the cause.

  • Dying before 15 minutes. 36% of games have three or more deaths before the 15th minute; they win only 40.0%, against 61.2% when Nami dies once or less (41% of games). Instead: Nami has no dash — her bubble is her only answer to an engage. Stay level with your marksman, not in front, and keep the bubble for their engage support rather than for poke.
  • Placing too few wards. Games where Nami places 9 wards or fewer before 15 minutes (34%) win 50.9%; those with 12 or more (37%), 50.9%. Instead: ward the river before every trade and every objective, with a control ward in the lane brush — your bubble only stops what you see coming.
  • Electrocute instead of Summon Aery. Electrocute · Domination + Sorcery is taken in 1,119 Nami games and wins 48.4%, against 52.2% for Summon Aery · Sorcery + Resolve. Instead: Summon Aery, with Resolve or Inspiration.
  • Throwing the bubble at a target free to move. Your bubble lands after a short delay: thrown from afar at a free target, it misses. Instead: throw it where the target has to stand — at the end of a dash, on an enemy an ally holds, on a marksman stepping up for a last hit.
  • Healing without hitting anyone. Your W bounces between allies and enemies: cast on an ally far from the enemy, it only heals. Instead: in a trade, cast it on the enemy next to your marksman, or on your marksman next to the enemy — it hits one and heals the other.
